Actually they're off the road now, slowly sniffing around their new home. Except for Marigold, who is hiding and will probably continue to hide for quite awhile. We know where she is, she just thinks we can't see her -- which would be pretty difficult since she is, as one of our movers commented, "gato gordo."
We did some chemical enhancement on all three cats the first and second days on the road and they complained a little from their kennels in the backseat (somewhere mid-trip I decided that 'cages' was sort of vile sounding and began trying to refer to them as 'kennels'). On the fourth day we let Yarrow skip his kitty-go-night-night meds and he did stunningly well. On the fourth (and last) day we let Neo skip his, too, and he meowed a bit but ended up settling down. Marigold -- drug her up or she'll claw her way right through the kennel wall.
In the first motel (Cheyenne, WY) one wall was all mirror. Neo went right up to it and began adoring the kitty-in-the-mirror. He spent a good deal of the evening face to face or paws to paws with his image. After that, everywhere we stopped he went looking for a mirror, hopping up on dressers to find the beautiful black cat. He also went to great lengths to check out large framed 'motel art,' but those were always disappointing: they seemed like they might be more mirrors, they were glassy and vaguely reflective, but did not hold satisfactory images of his new friend. Now we're home at last and there are no low or dresser-top mirrors. Life is filled with transitory shallow relationships, Neo.
